Alopecia Areata

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia Areata is an acute onset, inflammatory-related type of hair loss, which manifests itself mostly in circular to oval-shaped hairless areas of the scalp. The causes of Alopecia Areata are not entirely clear. It is generally assumed that Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disease and that the hair follicles, although dormant, are not dead. Genetic causes seem to play a role and additional triggers may include: stress, trauma, infections, allergies, pregnancy, and medications among other possible causes.
The hair follicles are not destroyed but may contain inflammatory cells (e.g. T-Lymphocytes) instead of strands of hair. Therefore hair does not grow in the affected Areata areas.

Forms of Alopecia include

  • Alopecia Areata -- patches of hair loss
  • Alopecia Totalis -- complete loss of scalp hair
  • Alopecia Universalis -- total loss of all body hair

Depending on which type of Alopecia you or your child may have, your age, and the extent of hair loss, there are a variety of treatment options available for disrupting or distracting the immune attack and/or stimulating the hair follicle — especially for those who have milder forms of the disease (less than 50% hair loss). If hair loss is not widespread, the hair will often regrow in a few months without treatment. For more severe hair loss, it is not clear how much treatment can help change the course of the condition.

Common treatments may include

  • Steroid injection under the skin surface
  • Medicines applied to the skin
  • Ultraviolet light therapy
  • Alternative therapies

How can THYMUSKIN® support therapy?

Thymuskin is one of the alternative forms of therapy. The included bovine-free thymic peptides have a positive effect on the inflammatory response and in particular on the T-lymphocytes. This way Thymuskin supports the remission of the symptoms of inflammation and the hair follicle can form fibers and produce new hair once again.

  • Anti-inflammatory effect on the hair follicle
  • Supports remission of symptoms
  • Hair follicle can form fibers and produce new hair
  • No side effects, like they are possible using drug related therapies (cortisone, steroids etc.)

THYMUSKIN® is recommended by the Alopecia Areata Association of Germany

Test results from blood samples of healthy donors have shown that the thymic peptides used in Thymuskin stimulate human cells of the immune system to differentiate and multiply. This stimulation by Thymuskin releases messengers (interleukin II) to the human cells of the immune system, which modulate the entire network of the immune system.

Clinical data

These findings obtained in the laboratory were confirmed by application observations at several German skin and university hospitals. At the dermatological clinic Darmstadt, new hair growth was observed after 12 months of treatment with Thymuskin Shampoo and Serum in 86% of all cases. The number of hair lost each day fell from 245 hairs before the start of treatment on 10 hairs after 12 months.

Based on these experiences, Thymuskin was also used in patients suffering from Alopecia areata totalis and Alpecia areata totalisive universalis. In 65% of all cases, visible hair growth occurred at the head and / or body after 9 to 12 months.

In 40% of the cases, there was a complete decrease in the alopecia areata totalis of the head hair (all 5 patients with alopecia areata totalis and 1 patient with alopecia areata universalis) or complete hair growth of the body hair (2 cases with Alopecia areata universalis) . It is astonishing that patients suffered from this disease up to 18 years, and up to two all had already undergone treatment with steroids and other treatments. Those cases had been several years behind and were not successful.

Treatment duration

Depending on the individual situation (kind and duration of Alopecia areata), the daily treatment should be carried out for 6-24 months, with first successes (significant decrease in daily hair loss) after three months and beginning regrowth of the hair after 9-12 months. When all herds are fully grown, the treatment can be reduced to 2-3 times a week. In order to prevent a relapse, this minimum application should be maintained in any case.

Side effects

No systemic or local side effects occur.
